Harvesting the Forest, aka, Wood Harvesting, and Making Paper were originally produced by Chuc Halstead for for the popular Maine PBS children’s program, Field Trip in 1981.  The first program includes a visit to Maine’s Great Northern Paper Company’s woodlands to explain the different types of wood harvesting techniques, cutting practices and forest management.  The company’s woodland’s management department is profiled and their role in the process is highlighted.  Making Paper, takes us to the Great Northern Paper Company mill in Millinocket, Maine.  Expresses the importance of paper in our daily lives.  Details the entire papermaking process from logs entering the wood yard to the custom rolls of paper being loaded in the trainshed.  At this time, 4,000 people were employed between their two mills in Millinocket and East Millinocket.  There were 18 pulp mills and 21 paper mills across the state. Paper-making was, on average, the best paying job in industry and the largest employer in the State.  Maine’s paper production was second only to Wisconsin at that time.
