Vinalhaven Island, 15 miles off the Maine coast, has always been a fishing and lobstering center, but for over 100 years it also played an important role in the building of America's cities. Many tons of granite were quarried from the island's bedrock and were cut, shaped and carved to be shipped by schooners, sloops and lighters to the East and Gulf coasts and as far west as Kansas City.
